Nexen has been named to the 2012 roster of the Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations in the World. This extensive corporate sustainability assessment evaluated 4000 large companies worldwide and selected the top 100. This listing is an annual project of Corporate Knights, a Canadian magazine devoted to corporate social responsibility. On this year’s list, Nexen ranked 89 on the list.
Kelly Kowalchuk, Vice President, HSE&SR, notes this is the third consecutive year we’ve been named to the list. “We’re proud of this consistent recognition,” he says. “It shows we’re delivering on our commitment of being a responsible energy developer by working to integrate sustainability into all we do.”
The Global 100 list, released each year at the World Economic Forum in Davos, ranks major corporations on a wide variety of factors including their relative energy and water consumption, carbon emissions, board diversity, the ratio of CEO-to-worker pay, and the amount of waste they generate.
The Global 100 ranking is widely recognized for its application of hard metrics in the area of sustainability. For the 2012 Global 100, Corporate Knights tapped intelligence from the world’s largest sustainability research alliance put together by Legg Mason’s Global Currents Investment Management and Phoenix Global Advisors LLC. This alliance identified the top 10% of companies from a universe of 4000 global stocks. These companies were then evaluated on 11 environmental, social and governance performance metrics including safety, water, energy and waste. Results were then verified with support from Bloomberg and Jantzi-Sustainalytics.
The 2012 list was announced at the annual Corporate Knights dinner at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
