Using Technology to Reduce Air Emissions

Through investments in technology, we’re working to ensure the oil and gas products we generate are produced in a manner that meets, or exceeds, the regulatory requirements that preserve regional air quality. For example:

• Our Long Lake oil sands facility in northern Alberta features state-of-the-art sulphur recovery equipment, enabling the capture of up to 98% of sulphur dioxide (SO₂) emissions.
• We’re working to reduce nitrogen oxide (NO_x), SO₂ and particulates at our shale gas operations near Dilly Creek, B.C. by piloting a bi-fuel generator which runs on both diesel fuel and cleaner-burning natural gas.
• Nexen's Balzac gas plant, which operated for 50 years and is now being decommissioned, featured advanced low NO_x burners designed to significantly reduce NO_x emissions over its producing life.
