Protecting People Through Safe Work Practices
We’re committed to excellence in health and safety performance and target zero harm to our employees, contractors and the communities that neighbour our businesses. Taking action to avoid accidents and injuries is a continual process and mindset at Nexen. We integrate safe work practices across the company to control hazards and mitigate risk with a particular focus on high-risk or non-routine work.
Life Saving Rules
We’re committed to creating a safe working environment and in support of this commitment, we’ve implemented Life Saving Rules. The rules are applicable to all our employees and contractors – providing practical guidance on safe behaviour for the workplace. Created from industry best practice, our Life Saving Rules work to strengthen our safety culture and eliminate high-potential incidents. The rules are:
- Always conduct a hazard assessment
- Ensure safe systems of work
- Follow the management of change (MOC) process
- Isolate energy sources
- No breaking of containment without a valid work permit
- Do not enter a confined space without authorization
- Work safely at heights
- Conduct safe lifting operations
- Drive safely
- Assess all ground disturbance hazards
- Do not work under the influence of drugs or alcohol
- Ignition sources are not allowed in areas where hydrocarbons may be present
