Overview
Nexen recognizes and respects the unique interests Aboriginal people and communities have in the land. When those lands are in close proximity to where we operate, we seek to mitigate our activities that may impact the traditions of Aboriginal people. When impacts are unavoidable, we look to establish partnerships, allowing these communities to continue their traditional activities in a manner that is mutually beneficial.
When partnering with Aboriginal communities, Nexen strives to build long-lasting relationships by being respectful of customs and culture, while also collaborating with community members on projects that strengthen education, career training, employment and business development. We work to ensure Aboriginal people participate in our operations and share in the economic and social benefits of our developments near their communities. We also seek the engagement of Aboriginal people in our efforts to reduce environmental impacts.
At Nexen, building relationships with Aboriginal communities focuses on:
-
Consultation — We are committed to consulting with Aboriginal communities and establishing meaningful, mutually-beneficial relationships based on respect, trust and a shared understanding of the issues related to development.
-
Business Development — Nexen believes in sharing the economic and social benefits of resource development with Aboriginal stakeholders by supporting Aboriginal businesses that provide competitive goods and services.
-
Employment — Nexen develops Aboriginal employment opportunities and actively recruits Aboriginal students. We provide scholarships and summer employment to Aboriginal students each year.
-
Social Responsibility — Our aim is to identify and support initiatives that advance Aboriginal social and cultural priorities through Aboriginal partnerships.
