For the sixth time since the survey began in 2000, Nexen has been named one of the 50 best employers in Canada. Each year, Hewitt Associates and The Globe and Mail’s Report on Business magazine sponsors the 50 Best Employers in Canada list. In the 2008 study, Nexen placed 50th out of 50 companies.

“Asking employees for their feedback is the right thing to do and the Hewitt Survey is one of the methods we have utilized over the last number of years,” says Randy Jahrig, Nexen’s vice president, Human Resources and Corporate Services. “The survey helps us to understand employee opinions on everything from corporate reputation and leadership to business practices and corporate culture.”

Placement on the Top 50 list is based on ‘employee engagement’, the state of emotional and intellectual commitment an individual has to his or her employer. Hewitt measures engagement based on:

• Say: When employees speak positively about the organization to co-workers, potential employees and customers
• Stay: When employees have an intense desire to be a member of the organization
• Strive: When employees exert extra effort and are dedicated to doing the very best job possible to contribute to the organization's business success.

“As employee engagement is the basis of the survey, we’re pleased to see our score increase from 68 to 70 per cent over last year,” says Randy.

Nexen was among 17 companies based in Western Canada to qualify for one of the top 50 spots. Other companies that made the list were Bennett Jones LLP, Earls Restaurants Ltd., Sleep Country Canada, and Deloitte & Touche LLP. Nexen was one of two oil and gas companies on this year's list. The other, Ultramar Ltée, is based out of Montreal.
