Charlie Fischer, President and CEO of Nexen Inc. accepted the 2005 Alberta Business Person of the Year award at the Telus Convention Centre in Calgary, Alberta.

The Alberta Business Person of the Year award recognizes individuals who embrace leadership, commitment to their employees and community, strategic thinking, pursuit of excellence and balanced workplace values. Now in its eighth year, the award is designed to showcase Alberta’s business achievements and excellence.

Charlie joins the ranks of previous award-winners such as Dr. Sam Shaw (Northern Alberta Institute of Technology), Clive Beddoe (WestJet) and John Forzani (Forzani Group).

At the award luncheon, Charlie spoke about Alberta’s burgeoning oil sands growth and the need to address the severe labour shortages through better access to post-secondary education.

“Alberta is now facing a severe labour shortage that will only get worse unless action is taken by government and the business sector,” says Charlie. “The simple solution is to see a substantial investment in education and training in all sectors. This will not only benefit Alberta but all of Canada and will encourage a sustainable, robust economy.”
