Nexen received the Conference Board of Canada/Spencer Stuart National Award in Governance on February 7. This prominent award was presented to us because of our innovative governance practices, including our “governance roadshow," a tool dedicated to building relationships through face-to-face meetings with stakeholders.
Nexen’s governance team is led by John McWilliams, Rick Beingessner and Sylvia Groves. They meet annually with stock exchanges, shareholders, organizations that represent shareholders, credit rating agencies, external consultants and service companies. The roadshows allow Nexen to engage stakeholders, act on ideas generated by dialogue and implement advice for improvements.
“Nexen is a company that does the right things for the right reasons. I was honoured to accept the Conference Board of Canada/Spencer Stuart National Award in Governance on Nexen’s behalf,” says Francis Saville, chair of the board of directors at Nexen. “The award recognizes Nexen’s exceptional governance practices including an innovative approach to discussing governance issues with stakeholders and making improvements. I’m pleased that Nexen’s long-term commitment to good governance is being recognized.”
The award is given to one organization from each of the private, public and not-for-profit sectors every year. It is designed to recognize innovations in governance that improve governance practices, yield tangible results and can be applied to other organizations.
Nexen’s commitment to Safety, Environment and Social Responsibility led to the decision in 2002 to develop and implement the governance roadshow and followed on the heels of new corporate governance legislation. The roadshows are fully supported by the Nexen’s board of directors and management team, who see governance excellence as a key driver of our overall success.
