Nexen employees enjoyed a day of playground building, sunshine and goodwill.

Nexen’s Young Professionals Volunteer Initiative held its first volunteering event on May 11 at LeRoi Daniels School in Calgary, where 28 employees built a new playground. Recently launched, the Young Professionals Volunteer Initiative hopes to engage Nexen’s young professional community in fun monthly volunteer events that combine elements of socializing, networking and good works.

"We had a super turnout for our first volunteering event on May 11,” says Pamela Foster, production engineer at Nexen and founder of the initiative. “Thanks to everyone who participated – the school was elated by our generosity and it was heartwarming to observe the kids’ reactions throughout the day as they saw their new playground taking shape.”

The second volunteer event will be on Wednesday, June 20, and volunteers will be spending the day planting a cutting garden for the Alberta Cerebral Palsy Association. Although the initiative focuses on getting young professionals more involved in volunteering, Nexen employees of any age can participate in the events.

The Young Professionals Volunteer Initiative events take place only in Calgary, but Nexen employees worldwide are encouraged to become involved in volunteer activities.

• Saturday, July 21 – Hosting 25 kids from Kids Up Front – Kids Count at Calaway Park.
• Thursday, August 9 – Hosting 55 immigrant youth from the Calgary Bridge Foundation for Youth at the Calgary Zoo.
• Thursday, October 11 – Preparing and serving the Annual Thanksgiving Breakfast for the Good Companion 50 Plus Club.
