Wishart Robson, Nexen’s senior advisor for Safety and Climate Change, was recently appointed to the National Round Table on the Environment and the Economy (NRTEE). The group, created by the Government of Canada in 1988, aims to generate and promote innovative ways to advance Canada’s environmental and economic interests in combination, rather than in isolation.

The NRTEE examines the environmental and economic implications of priority issues and offers advice on how best to reconcile the sometimes competing interests of economic prosperity and environmental conservation.

"This is an opportunity to explore the area where our national prosperity and competitiveness agenda intersects with Canadians’ stated environmental priorities,” says Wishart. “And as energy is central to Canadian's standard of living, quality of life and economic well being, I look forward to sharing my perspectives, developed over the past 25 years in our industry, with my new associates on the roundtable."

Wishart has held increasingly senior environmental and safety positions in the oil and gas industry throughout his career. He is responsible for providing strategic analysis and advice to the Board and Senior Executives and otherwise preparing the company for a future carbon economy.

The NRTEE is composed of members who are appointed by the Governor in Council and include representatives from the corporate and non-profit sector, environmental organizations, universities and Aboriginal communities, among other areas.

Other members on the NRTEE include Steve Williams, COO of Suncor Energy Inc., Angus Bruneau chairman of the Board of Directors of Fortis Inc., Christopher Hilkene, president of the Clean Water Foundation and Ken McKinnon, chair of the Yukon Environmental and Socio-Economic Assessment Board.
