For the fifth year in a row, we have been recognized as a global leader in sustainable business practices by our inclusion in the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index.

Launched in 1999, the Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes track the financial performance of leading sustainability-driven companies worldwide. To be included in the DJSI World Index, Nexen had to be identified among the top 10% of the biggest 2,500 global companies included in the index in terms of our economic, environmental and social performance.

This year, we are one of 13 oil and gas companies included in the index, together with companies such as BG Group, BP plc, Royal Dutch Shell, Statoil, Total and Woodside Petroleum. We are one of 12 Canadian-based companies included, together with Alcan, CIBC, Enbridge, Royal Bank, Shell Canada, Suncor, TransCanada Corporation and others.

To be considered for inclusion, each year Nexen completes a 104-question survey covering our company’s approach to corporate governance, climate change, supply chain standards and labour practices. The analysis is conducted by an external research group (SAM Group) and the results are verified by an external auditor (PricewaterhouseCoopers).

The DJSI World Index is more than just a prize for responsible corporate behaviour.  An increasing number of investors are choosing to put their money into companies with strong sustainability performance. Asset managers in 14 countries use the DJSI to build sustainability-driven investment portfolios – and those investment vehicles currently amount to US$4.1 billion.
