Jim Shaw, Nexen's manager of Community Affairs recently accepted, on Nexen's behalf, an environmental award from Ethics in Action. This is a Vancouver-based awards program that recognizes corporate responsibility initiatives, and tries to inspire and educate companies to ‘do the right thing’.
The award recognized Nexen's reclamation project at our former chlor-alkali plant in Squamish, B.C. We invested $42 million over five years to restore the Squamish waterfront to an environmentally healthy state, exceeding B.C. government and legal requirements.
New standards of remediation excellence in B.C. were set throughout this project. We developed new techniques for water and soil treatment, new tidal and estuary evacuation techniques, and water management and environmental studies led to further scientific understanding of the Howe Sound eco-system.
This project is just one example of Nexen’s commitment to sustainable development in partnership with the communities where we operate.
