Nexen and one of its Senior Executives was recently recognized at an event celebrating United Nations (UN) Day in Calgary on last week at a reception held at the Calgary Zoo.

The United Nations Association of Calgary and Canadian Business for Social Responsibility partnered to celebrate UN Day and recognize the efforts of corporate leaders who have adopted the ten principles of the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC). The UNGC is a voluntary initiative aimed at fostering sustainable and responsible business practices.

Dr. Randy Gossen, vice president of Nexen’s Health, Safety, Environment and Social Responsibility division, was recognized at the event for his contributions as a United Nations Global Compact Advisor for Canada. The Global Compact has grown to become the world’s largest corporate citizenship initiative with more than 2,700 companies from over 80 countries. It calls on business and other stakeholders to support 10 principles in the areas of human rights, labor, the environment and anti-corruption.

“The challenge is to incorporate the spirit and values associated with corporate social responsibility into the fabric of corporate culture,” Randy said at the event. “This is not an easy thing to do and will not happen by osmosis, it takes time and commitment by all. I am proud of the reputation that my company Nexen has earned for our socially responsible and ethical business practices.”

Nexen was also recognized for adopting socially responsible business practices at the reception.

“Calgary and Canada are rightfully proud of the leadership that both Nexen Inc. and Randall Gossen have been providing in strong corporate citizenship, not merely in their contributions to the UN Global Compact, but also throughout their proven history and responsive performance in their relationship to their community”, said UNAC National Executive Director, Kathryn White and Matthew Grant, Interim-President of UNAC Calgary.

Since its origin in 1945, the UN family of nations has grown to 192 countries and has seen a multitude of successes and failures in addressing their mandate of alleviating global poverty and achieving peace throughout the world.
