Nexen’s Community Investment Program provides direct contributions and sponsorships to non-profit organizations that provide important services and are compatible with our business objectives. The annual Community Investment budget is equivalent to one per cent of Nexen’s operating profit before tax (based on the average of the three previous years). Nexen invests in communities in the following categories:
- Health and Welfare
- Education and Literacy
- Arts and Culture
- Civic and Community
- Environmental
- Sports and Recreation
Requests for funding are evaluated against the following criteria:
- extent of Nexen’s presence in the area;
- perceived need is compelling and does not duplicate existing services or facilities;
- provides long-term, sustainable, positive results for the greatest number of people possible;
- project being funded fits with our values and principles;
- services or activities are provided without regard to race, religion, creed, sex or sexual orientation;
- soliciting organization is financially viable and efficiently and effectively managed;
- organization is a tax-registered, non-profit group, provides a published list of directors and officers and provides current financial statements on request;
- request includes a clear statement as to the expected use of the funds and benefits to be derived from support; and
- requests from organizations which have previously received support, should include a clear statement of the benefits that resulted from that support.
Nexen will not provide funding for the following kinds of requests (except in unique circumstances):
- organizations without a tax-registered number or a non-profit society number;
- individual applicants or stand-alone research; advocacy groups or lobbying organizations;
- provincial-level organizations having a national body;
- third-party fundraisers or professional solicitors;
- feasibility studies;
- conferences, seminars, congresses, workshops;
- telephone solicitations;
- service clubs or fraternal organizations;
- professional associations or events;
- private clubs funded through membership fees;
- travel, accommodation, meal expenses, field trips, tours etc.;
- competitive sports teams;
- student or alumni organizations; and
- advertising, promotions and film, video, television or book productions.

Please be aware that due to the volume of high applications we receive, Nexen will only respond to those organizations that have been approved for investment. Applications are approved on a quarterly basis. Please allow 30 to 60 days for notification.
Employee Matching Gift Program Nexen encourages employees and directors to support non-profit organizations that reflect their personal interests and concerns. The company matches individual contributions that meet corporate and matching gift guidelines (minimum contribution matched—$25; maximum—$10,000 per employee each year).
