Nexen employees give company high marks for environmental stewardship

For the second year in a row, Nexen is one of 30 companies in Canada to make Aon Hewitt’s 2011 Green 30 List. Maclean’s magazine publishes the list, identifying organizations that have incorporated environmental stewardship into their business model and corporate culture according to their employees.

Over 130,000 employees at more than 250 organizations answered questions on their employers’ environmental policies and practices as part of the 2011 surveys on the Best Employers and Best Small and Medium Employers in Canada. As a result of our participation in the Best Employers study, Nexen was automatically considered for the Green 30 List.

“We take our commitment to being a responsible developer very seriously which is why we’re taking action on many fronts to reduce our environmental impacts,” says Kelly Kowalchuk, vice president, HSE&SR. “Nexen employees are dedicated to these efforts and should be proud of the gains we’re making.”

Some of the steps we’re taking to manage our footprint include:

  • Data management project – We’re introducing new water use and waste data tracking tools to help us better measure and manage water and waste.
  • Improving performance through collaboration – Nexen partners with peer companies in organizations such as the Horn River Basin Producers Group – a shale gas industry initiative aimed at minimizing environmental impacts while maximizing economic benefits to the area.
  • Oil sands development – We use a steam-assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) system at our Long Lake oil sands project that results in less surface disturbance than traditional oil sands mining operations.
  • Annual Environment Week – This event, held at many of our locations around the world, creates employee awareness and educational opportunities on important environmental issues including water preservation, commuter issues and recycling initiatives.
