Nexen has been returned to the Dow Jones Sustainability Index North America – an index listing 145 North American companies that have been identified as top sustainability performers. This marks the eleventh consecutive year we’ve been named to either the North American or World index.

To be considered for inclusion on the Dow Jones, the HSE&SR team completes an annual survey covering a range of economic, social and environmental topics from corporate governance to biodiversity. Nexen's scores are benchmarked against other companies, and the top companies are included in the index.

Some of our top scores include:

  • Stakeholder engagement - 100% (2010: 98%)
  • Social Impacts on Communities - 100% (2010: 93%)
  • Risk and Crisis Management - 96% (2010: 96%)
  • Environmental Policy/Management Systems - 96% (2010: 93%)
  • Codes of Conduct/Anti-Corruption- 89% (2010: 89%)

Our lowest score was in the water-related risks category where we scored 10% compared to an average industry score of 18%.

“The survey helps us identify our strengths, areas for improvement and any notable year-over-year changes in performance,” explains Kelly Kowalchuk, VP, HSE&SR. “Over the next few weeks, we’ll be reviewing the Dow Jones scores in detail, looking for opportunities where we can do better, particularly in the area of water-related risks.”
