In 2007, Nexen UK partnered with Mackie Academy, a local secondary school in Aberdeen.
“The aim of this partnership is to use our expertise to help the students develop core skills, positive attitudes and a better understanding of themselves and the world of work,” says Steve Regulski, Manager of Health, Safety and Environmental Legal Compliance & Social Responsibility, who is also the key contact for the Nexen/Mackie Academy partnership.
Over the years Nexen employees have developed a close relationship with the school including participating in the Young Enterprise project. Neil Marchant, Senior Manager for Engineer & Subsea Operations and Sharon Gray, Team Lead for Emission & Measurement have acted as advisors to students setting up business ventures.
“The aim is to help pupils develop business skills. The top teams and their businesses compete in a regional competition and Mackie students have twice been placed in the finals,” explains Neil.
Nexen employees also help senior science students prepare for their final examinations by listening to presentations on their project work and questioning the students on the technical content.
Mackie Academy hosted the annual “Education in Industry” dinner with the support of Nexen. Guests at this black tie event included many of the key oil and gas operating and service companies in Aberdeen including Nexen.
Mackie Academy organized the whole evening and Nexen matched proceeds from the evening’s raffle and charity auction. A grand total of £20,744 was donated to Spinal Research - a charity chosen by the school pupils.
“It was a great night and showcased what Mackie pupils can achieve,” says Steve.
