Employees in Nexen's Houston office clean a section of beach in Galveston Island State Park.

As an oil and gas developer in the Gulf of Mexico committed to responsible development, Nexen is working to create awareness of marine ecosystems and environmental challenges. As part of our commitment to the environment, Nexen is participating in the Adopt-a-Beach program near our Houston offices.

It all started with a small group of employees who came to Nexen’s U.S. leadership team with an idea to support the Texas General Land Office’s Adopt-A-Beach program. As “Beach Guardians” Nexen has committed to cleaning up one mile of the beach twice a year for three years. A permanent sign on our adopted section of beach testifies to our employees’ efforts.

The first beach cleanup was on April 28, with more than 100 Nexen employees, family members and friends coming out to clean up the one mile stretch of beach at Galveston Island State Park, one hour south of the Houston office.

“The Adopt-a-Beach program is an excellent example of Nexen’s commitment to social responsibility,” says Nadine Busmann, Manager, Stakeholder Engagement. “This initiative provides an opportunity for Nexen employees to engage with the community and key stakeholders on environmental issues in an area where our industry has a potential impact on the environment.”

Like a spark that lit a fire, the first event grew rapidly over the course of just a few months – and given its success, it looks like it will become a tradition for U.S. employees.

“It was great to experience the Nexen family’s team spirit, and to top it all off, the weather was perfect,” says Vino Philip, Senior Cost Control Analyst in the Accounting team. “As an employee of Nexen, the ReachOut program reinforces my commitment to be environmentally and socially responsible.”

The next beach cleanup is set for September 22 and if the last beach cleanup was any indication, it’s sure to be a success.
