            The Sundial - Affordable Housing

We’re investing right in our backyard and helping the Sundial retire its mortgage.

We’re proud to support projects that help build strong, inclusive and vibrant communities.

In Calgary, we’ve donated $750,000 to the Calgary Drop-In and Rehabilitation Centre to pay down the mortgage on the Sundial building – an affordable housing complex located next door to our head office. We plan to further our commitment to support the success of the Sundial’s residents over the coming years. Among our other local efforts, we also support United Way campaigns in Canada and the United States.

Nexen made a $100,000 contribution to the Greater New Orleans Foundation to help fishing families recover from the impact of the Macondo oil spill. And in the UK, we committed $40,000 to the Journey of a Lifetime Trust. This organization helps transform the lives of disadvantaged young people through empowering expeditions held in locations around the world.

In Colombia, Nexen supports a wide range of charitable foundations and local initiatives. These include nutrition programs for children, seniors and people with disabilities, education programs for young people and support for an organization that provides housing, food and care for children receiving cancer treatment in Bogota. Nexen has also funded improvements to a milk cooperative utilized by two communities near our shale gas operations.

In Nigeria, we’re also casting a wide net of hope and assistance. Projects there include an organization dedicated to protecting street children, a pediatric ward in the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, and a forest biodiversity and conservation research project that empowers local communities through employment and education.

            Investing in Education

Nexen invested $2.5 million to enhance education in Anzac, AB. learn more

By funding educational programs, research initiatives and scholarships, we’re helping to set the course for future generations. Our single largest commitment to date is the Nexen Yemen Scholarship Program, which since 1997 has awarded scholarships to 130 young Yemenis to pursue four-year post-secondary degrees in Calgary. Although we will not be awarding any more scholarships since the expiration of the Masila Block contract, we plan to continue funding our current students through to completion of their degree programs. In 2013, our yearly financial obligations will begin to decrease, and we expect the program to conclude by 2018.

Other contributions include educational support in Fort McMurray, where $1 million is going towards the new Science and Technology Centre for students in grades 7 through 12, and $750,000 is assisting Keyano College in building the Oilsands Trades and Technology Centre. Nearby, in Anzac, the Bill Woodward School is receiving $1.5 million earmarked for enhancing education. In addition, Nexen has committed $1 million to the Nexen Oil Sands Scholarship program to encourage and assist students who undertake to further their post-secondary education.

At the university level, Nexen has invested $1 million over five years to support the Nexen Scholars program at Mount Royal University as well as funding research chairs at the University of Alberta and University of Calgary. Thanks in part to Nexen’s $1.6 million contribution, research at the University of Calgary’s Schulich School of Engineering is expected to significantly improve oil sands upgrading methods. In addition, Nexen has committed $250,000 to the University of Texas at Austin’s Jackson School of Geosciences.
