          The Sundial - Affordable Housing

We're helping the Sundial in Calgary, Canada retire its mortgage.

          Supporting Communities

Nexen is committed to giving back to the communities where we operate. We believe successful companies are a part of successful communities. When we help build communities that are strong and dynamic, they attract and retain people who can be a part of our growing business success.

In each country where we operate, we "ReachOut" to help make communities better places. Here are just a few examples:

          Canada – Calgary
In Calgary, we’ve committed $750,000 to the Calgary Drop-In and Rehabilitation Centre to pay down the mortgage on the Sundial building – an affordable housing complex located next door to our head office. We plan to further our commitment to support the success of the Sundial’s residents over the coming years.

          Canada – Oil Sands
Some of Nexen's major investments in northern Alberta, Canada include supporting schools in both Fort McMurray and Anzac (adjacent to our Long Lake oil sands facility), spearheading a multi-use community centre for the Chipewyan Prairie Dene First Nation, helping develop an indoor running track at Fort McMurray’s Keyano College, supporting the Nexen Field House community and sports facility, and enabling the Fort McMurray YMCA to expand its vital day care service. In early 2012, Nexen announced an investment of $1 million over four years to support the implementation and development of a new Science and Technology Centre at Father Patrick Mercredi High School in Fort McMurray.

          United Kingdom
In the UK, our support includes the Lord Provost's Charitable Trust in Aberdeen, the Pitcaple Environmental Project, the UK-wide Outward Bound Trust, the Mayor's Fund for London, and Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children. We committed £100,000 over three years to the Journey of a Lifetime Trust. This organization helps transform the lives of disadvantaged young people through empowering expeditions held in locations around the world. We have also set up 11, four-year undergraduate scholarships for students in science and business programs at English and Scottish universities based on academic merit and financial need.

United States – Gulf of Mexico
Nexen made a $100,000 contribution to the Greater New Orleans Foundation to help fishing families recover from the impact of the Macondo oil spill.

          Colombia
In Colombia, Nexen supports a wide range of charitable foundations and local initiatives. These include nutrition programs for children, seniors and people with disabilities, education programs for young people, and sponsorship of an organization that provides housing, food and care for children receiving cancer treatment in Bogota. Nexen has also supported improvements to a milk cooperative used by two communities near our exploration operations, which include new cooling and storage tanks to double capacity, as well as renovations to improve the facility.

          West Africa
Nexen and our Usan co-venturers collectively support a number of community projects in Nigeria, including a US$1.2 million contribution to open additional beds, install a new power generator and purchase state-of-the-art medical equipment at the pediatric ward of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital. Nexen also independently supports a number of community projects, including the Street Child Care and Welfare Initiative (SCCWI), a Nigerian charitable organization that provides education, counseling, rehabilitation and temporary accommodation for homeless children in Lagos, and the Montane Forest Project, a conservation research initiative that empowers local communities through employment and education.

          Yemen
During our 25-plus years in Yemen, we've made a significant difference in the country and formed close ties with the Yemeni people. We’ve helped build schools, provided community medical clinics, purchased and installed power generators in local communities and supported a number of projects to improve water supply and sanitation facilities.

          Supporting the Next Generation

By funding educational programs, research initiatives and scholarships, we’re helping to set the course for future generations. Our contributions include educational support in Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada where $1 million is going towards the new Science and Technology Centre at Father Patrick Mercredi High School for students in grades 7 through 12, and $750,000 is assisting Keyano College in building the Oil Sands Trades and Technology Centre. Nearby, in Anzac, the Bill Woodward School is receiving $1.5 million earmarked for enhancing education. In addition, Nexen has committed $1 million to the Nexen Oil Sands Scholarship program to encourage and assist students who undertake to further their post-secondary education.

In the UK, Nexen supports the Prince’s Trust youth charity, including contributing to a program which helps young people develop the skills, experience and qualifications to increase their employablility in the oil and gas sector. We also support the Outward Bound Trust educational charity, increasing learning opportunities for students from Northfield Academy in Aberdeen and Uxbridge High School.

At the university level, Nexen has invested $1 million over five years to support the Nexen Scholars program at Mount Royal University in Calgary, Alberta as well as funding research chairs at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Alberta and the University of Calgary. Thanks in part to Nexen’s $1.6 million contribution, research at the University of Calgary’s Schulich School of Engineering is expected to significantly improve oil sands upgrading methods. Nexen also funds undergraduate scholarships at the Schulich School of Engineering, based on a $150,000 commitment originally made by CNOOC Canada Limited. In addition, Nexen has committed $250,000 to the University of Texas at Austin’s Jackson School of Geosciences.

Our single largest commitment to date is the Nexen Yemen Scholarship Program, which since 1997 has awarded scholarships to 130 young Yemenis to pursue
          four-year post-secondary degrees in Calgary.

Bison graze in southwest Saskatchewan on lands protected through Nexen’s support of the Nature Conservancy of Canada.

          Investing in a Sustainable Future

As global demand for hydrocarbons continues to increase, our commitment is to develop the energy consumers need in a responsible manner. To do this, we focus on strengthening our operational performance – increasing oil and gas production while also working to reduce our impacts to air, water and land. We also focus our community investments on projects that support environmental stewardship, conserving and remediating natural habitats, and the protection and conservation of wildlife.

The following are examples of how Nexen invests in a sustainable future.

In Alberta’s Rocky View County, Nexen contributed $70,000 over two years to the Alberta Institute for Wildlife Conservation. The funds support the protection of bird species and other wildlife through housing, rehabilitation and equipment for their care.

In southwest Saskatchewan, Nexen’s support of the Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) has helped to protect more than 13,000 acres of land on the Old Man on His Back Ranch. This land provides habitat for endangered animals such as the swift fox, burrowing owl, ferruginous hawk and northern leopard frog. And since 2004, the expansive conservation area has been home to a healthy and expanding herd of plains bison. Nexen has donated more than $500,000 to the NCC.

At the University of Saskatchewan, Nexen committed $90,000 over three years to the School of Environment and Sustainability. Scholarship recipients will do research to advance understanding in the following areas:

          • The effects of policy and governance on environmental performance in the energy industry;
          • Environmental management and practice in the energy industry; and
          • Social responsibility and collaborative governance in the energy sector.

Care, conservation and stewardship of the environment will continue to be a cornerstone of Nexen’s corporate giving strategy.
