Building Strong Relationships
At Nexen, how we work is as important as the results we deliver. We’re committed to managing our relationships, partnering with community members and other stakeholders in the areas where we operate. We build long-term trust with our stakeholders by sharing information, consulting with them about business decisions and working collaboratively to understand their needs and expectations.
In addition to building strong relationships with stakeholders in neighbouring communities, our approach to social responsibility also includes the steps we take to attract and retain a talented workforce. We’re committed to providing exciting, challenging and rewarding careers.
We believe our approach to corporate social responsibility provides us with a competitive advantage by allowing us to maintain our license to operate while also fostering support for our future growth.
Our Approach to Engagement
Being a good neighbour starts with anticipating and managing the social impacts of our operations on local communities. This is achieved through an ongoing engagement process that is maintained throughout the lifecycle of our operations. It includes:
- Risk assessments ensure our planned business activities will increase economic benefits to neighbouring communities. We also use these tools to identify potential social and environmental impacts and the steps we’ll take to mitigate them. These detailed assessments cover an examination of potential human rights risks as well as working with local governments to understand the wider goals and objectives of public policy.
- Consulting with our stakeholders before each new project begins and continuing the dialogue through the operational phase. We listen. We share information openly. We collaborate. We participate. And we give back through investments
in education, arts and culture, community development and Aboriginal partnerships.
